Faster notes
Hear why more notes feel busier, not faster.
-
Smaller notes
DoneA beat can be split into smaller notes: one per beat (quarter notes), two (eighth notes) or four (sixteenth notes). The beats stay where they are, so the tempo doesn’t change. Only the number of notes inside each beat does.

Split the beat

Busier or faster?
DoneBusier is not the same as faster. Listen to how far apart the beats are, not how many hats there are.
-
Which one has the faster tempo?
B, at 112 BPM. A has more hats, so it only sounds busier: its beats are further apart.
A: 96 BPM · a beat every 0.63 s B: 112 BPM · a beat every 0.54 s -
And these two?
A, at 122 BPM, with half as many hats as B.
A: 122 BPM · a beat every 0.49 s B: 100 BPM · a beat every 0.60 s
